Calicut or Kozhikode, as it is known in the local language Malayalam, is a place like none other. Kissed by the waves of the Arabian sea and embraced by the lush green Western ghats, Calicut is an ideal destination to relax and rejuvenate.

The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama is said to have stepped into the sands of Kappad near Kozhikode in 1498 hence opening a spice trade between India and Europe. About 50 km from Kozhikode town, Thusharagiri waterfall is a sight to see! Streams and waterfalls gushing down the magnificent Western ghats give a mystic feel to the rocks and lush green backdrops. Especially if you like trekking, do not miss this place!
Also known as the Mishkal mosque, this medieval structure is among the last such mosques remaining in Kerala. Imagine the stories the walls of this mosque built in the 14th century would have to say! It has 47 doors and several carved pillars. Such constructions hold a true testament to the architectural history of the Malabar area.
Sweet Meat street or ‘Mittai theruvu’, as it is known locally, is historically known as the trade and business center of the city. Popular for ‘Kozhikodan Halwa’ (a sweet delicacy) and banana chips among other street food, this local market is a must-go place. Apart from the lip-smacking food, here you also get a taste of the local culture. Take a walk through this pedestrian-friendly street and shop for a variety of pocket-friendly goods from clothes to utensils to art pieces, and almost anything that you are looking for!
